Adult ADHD & ASD Diagnosis
Combined ADHD & ASD Assessments at Awareness Psychology Clinic
We provide comprehensive assessments for adults (over 18) seeking a diagnosis or greater understanding of ADHD and Autism. Our approach is grounded in neurodiversity-affirming practice, meaning we view ADHD and Autism as natural variations in human experience, not disorders. Of course, these diagnoses can come with challenges, and identifying those challenges and possible solution pathways is also part of the assessment process.
Why a Combined Assessment?
Research shows that ADHD and Autism frequently occur together. In fact, studies suggest that up to 50–70% of adults with ADHD or who are autistic actually have significant traits of both (approximately 30% of those with ADHD will meet criteria for Autism and 70% of Autistic individuals will also meet criteria for ADHD). Because of this high overlap, separate assessments can sometimes miss important aspects of a person’s experience. These days, the gold standard of neurodiversity assessment includes assessing both ADHD and Autism in each person. If you require just one or the other (for example, if you have already been diagnosed with ADHD but are wanting an Autism assessment, just chat to us).
A combined assessment looks at both conditions side by side, so we can:
This approach helps to ensure you receive an accurate, nuanced understanding; one that acknowledges both challenges and strengths, and supports you in moving forward with clarity.
What does an Assessment Involve?
An assessment for ADHD and/or Autism involves several steps:

A combined assessment looks at both conditions side by side, so we can:
- Recognise a fuller picture of how your brain works and account for more of your experience.
- Avoid misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis by considering overlapping features.
- Provide more tailored recommendations, grounded in evidence about the way ADHD and Autism can interact.

What does an Assessment Involve?
An assessment for ADHD and/or Autism involves several steps:
- Self report questionnaires (these are questionnaires or surveys that you fill out yourself)
- Structured interviews (these are interviews between you and the psychologist with specific questions to answer about your experience)
- Clinical interview (this is a session between you and the psychologist with less structure and more discussion about aspects of your experience that might not have been captured in the questionnaires or structured interviews)
- Collateral information (this is information that you provide us or agree for us to collect from past records, including medical or school reports, as well as information from a family member or someone else who knows you well)
- Report and feedback session (you will have a final session with the psychologist to receive a report with the outcome of the assessment as well as recommendations for your next steps. The report can also be sent to another health practitioner, such as your GP)
